Duel on Vjun (Clone Wars)

During the age of the Clone Wars (in Legends continuity), a confrontation transpired on the world of Vjun. This battle saw Dark Jedi Asajj Ventress emerge victorious against Jedi Master Jai Maruk. Subsequently, Ventress captured Maruk and presented him to Count Dooku.

Prelude

In the year 19 BBY (Legends), Jedi Master Jai Maruk was conducting patrols within the Outer Rim Territories. His attention was drawn to an unusual pattern of small transports frequently appearing. Aboard his starfighter, specifically a Seltaya-class fast courier named Limit of Vision, he discreetly followed one such transport to its destination on the planet of Vjun. He executed a careful landing a considerable number of kilometers away from the rendezvous point. Despite his efforts to minimize his heat and IR signatures, the Separatist-aligned Dark Jedi Asajj Ventress detected his presence.

The duel

A lightsaber duel ensued between the two Force users. Maruk committed the error of underestimating Ventress's abilities. Initially, he attempted to disarm her during the early exchanges of their combat. However, he soon realized his mistake, as Ventress seized the advantage and relentlessly pushed him back. His balance and defensive stance deteriorated due to his increasingly desperate parries, ultimately leading to Ventress disarming him of his lightsaber. She then blindfolded Maruk and transported him to Château Malreaux, which served as the base of operations for the Separatist leader, Count Dooku. Although Ventress desired to execute Maruk to increase her number of Jedi kills to seventeen, Dooku opted to release him in order to convey a message to Grand Master Yoda.

Aftermath

Upon returning to Coruscant, Maruk meticulously reviewed the duel within his mind, critically analyzing every aspect and cataloging each mistake he had made. He mentally rehearsed their potential rematch countless times, strategizing which attacks would prove most effective and which opening stances to adopt. However, Maruk struggled to acknowledge a fundamental truth in his self-analysis: Ventress was simply the superior combatant. Their paths crossed once more at Phindar Station during a covert mission back to Vjun. It was during this encounter that he finally accepted this reality and nearly succumbed to the dark side of the Force due to his intense frustration and hatred. Only the intervention of his fellow Jedi Master, Maks Leem, prevented Maruk from falling to the light side. When Ventress ultimately struck him down with a fatal blow to the abdomen, Maruk was at peace and bore a smile.
