End Game

"End Game," a concise narrative, originates from the pen of James Luceno. Its appearance occurred within the updated version of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, released by Del Rey on January 31, 2012.

Synopsis

The story unfolds in the aftermath of Darth Maul's initial lightsaber duel against Qui-Gon Jinn on the sands of Tatooine. Maul reflects upon his errors stemming from his actions on the desert planet, given his failure to assassinate Jinn and his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and his subsequent inability to capture Queen Padmé Amidala. Despite this setback, Maul's Sith Master, Darth Sidious, tasks him with overseeing the continuing occupation of Naboo by the Trade Federation.

Upon arrival on Naboo, Maul assumes the mantle of supreme commander over the Trade Federation's invading droid forces. He harbors disdain for the perceived incompetence of the Federation's leadership, specifically figures like Viceroy Nute Gunray and Rune Haako. Regardless, Maul proceeds with Sidious's directive, ordering the droid army to locate and eliminate the Gungans as a potential threat. During this endeavor, Maul uncovers the fact that Naboo's previous ruler, King Ars Veruna, was murdered by a Muun named Hego Damask before the Federation's invasion. This revelation gains significance for Maul when he discovers that Damask is collaborating with Naboo's representative to the Galactic Republic, Senator Palpatine—Darth Sidious's secret identity—in orchestrating the Trade Federation's blockade of Naboo.

Consequently, Maul deduces that Damask might be a Sith Lord manipulating Palpatine, and that Palpatine is violating the Rule of Two by training Maul as a Sith Lord, even though Maul believes he is more of a weapon than a true Sith Lord. Nevertheless, Maul continues to execute his orders as the Battle of Naboo erupts. The story concludes as Obi-Wan Kenobi defeats Maul, severing him at the waist; however, Maul survives due to his intense will, power, and hatred, fueled by the dark side of the Force, directed against the Jedi, particularly Kenobi.
