Del Rey is a specialized imprint focusing on science-fiction and fantasy, operating under the umbrella of Random House. It originated in 1977 as a division of Ballantine Books. This imprint is the primary publisher of science-fiction works for Random House, notably including a large portion of the Star Wars books (except for those novels released between 1991 and 1999, which continue to be reprinted as Bantam Spectra titles).
Near the end of June in 2004, the company extended its agreement with Lucas Licensing, prolonging their book licensing rights through December 2008, and subsequently continued publishing Star Wars books.
In May of 2022, Random House made public that all of its licensed publications, Star Wars included, would be transferred to a fresh imprint known as Random House Worlds. Del Rey, in turn, would shift its focus to publishing original speculative fiction. The team previously responsible for Star Wars products at Del Rey transitioned to Random House.
Del Rey maintains social media accounts under the name Star Wars Books, which are used to announce any news concerning Star Wars books published by Del Rey.
