Fanned rawl

Rawls, often referred to as fanned rawls, were reptilian serpents that originated from the Mid Rim planet of Naboo.

Biology and appearance

A giant fanned rawl on Naboo

These creatures were indigenous to Naboo, but they also inhabited the world of Mandalore. Among the different kinds were giant fanned rawls, spitting rawls, and vine rawls, all of which were native to Naboo. The shadevale venomsting of Kashyyyk was a very similar species of snake.

Rawls possessed scaled skin. Their fans, situated along their sides, aided them in swimming. Fanned rawls had a venomous bite and were known as quite perilous snakes.

History

The Teräs Käsi attack known as Spitting Rawl was named in honor of one particular type of rawl. Loam Redge, an Inquisitor, compared the Rebel Alliance to fanned rawls. Pilots serving in the Naboo Royal Space Fighter Corps occasionally adopted "rawl" as their call sign.

Following the Battle of Yavin, Doctor Relan Smiff received the Herpetology Award from the Galactic Science Foundation for his discovery of giant fanned rawls residing on Naboo.

Behind the scenes

Fanned rawl concept from Pencil to Pixel

Fanned rawls appeared as creatures within the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game which was developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts, before its shutdown on December 15, 2011.

While the majority of Naboo's fauna had been well-defined through Episode I and other mediums, the development team introduced a select few new species to the planet, including the rawl, to populate certain ecological roles.
