Meteorite

Bahryn meteorite A Bahryn meteorite. A meteorite is defined as an object originating from space that impacted the surface of a planet. Luke Skywalker, who held the rank of Commander, initially thought that a meteorite had struck the area near Echo Base on the frozen world of Hoth; however, it was actually an Imperial probe droid.

Behind the scenes

In reality, a meteorite is a meteoroid (a piece of rock or iron in orbit around the sun) that survives its passage through the atmosphere of Earth (or another planet) and makes it to the ground. Conversely, the term meteor describes the visual phenomenon of a streak of light observed in the sky when a meteoroid enters the planet's atmosphere and burns up before reaching the surface; this explains why they are also referred to as "shooting stars."

The terms meteoroid, meteor, and meteorite are frequently confused because they are often used synonymously in everyday speech. In particular, "meteor" is commonly used to describe a meteoroid traveling through outer space, a glowing meteoroid within the atmosphere (instead of the luminous streak of light), or an object that has landed on Earth (for example, the name of Meteor Crater, a well-known impact crater located in Arizona), or even an object created by human hands.
