Hôtel Sidi Driss

Matmata Map Hôtel Sidi Driss, situated in Matmata, Tunisia, has gained prominence as a notable Star Wars filming location, often referred to as the Star Wars hotel. This ancient Berber dwelling, constructed centuries ago, functioned as the Lars homestead on Tatooine. The external shots were captured 300 kilometers westward at Chott el Jerid. Following the initial movie, A New Hope, the set decorations were dismantled, only to be completely reconstructed in 2000 for the production of Attack of the Clones. Visitors can experience the hotel year-round, with the original decorations still present. The hotel features five pits, with guest rooms in four of them. The fifth pit, known as the Star Wars pit, serves as the hotel's dining area. While overnight stays are not permitted within the sets themselves, patrons can dine in the very room featured in the film.

The Lars Family Dining Area

Philip Vanni in Lars dining room

The Lars family dining room's fresco had been obscured by numerous layers of quick lime applied over the years by the owner. In 1995, a dedicated French fan named Philip Vanni painstakingly restored the fresco to its original movie-themed appearance by carefully removing the lime and recreating the designs with a brush. He was also instrumental in renovating the room to mirror its cinematic portrayal. Consequently, visitors can now dine in the Lars dining room, which, prior to 1995, served merely as a storage space.
