The group known as the Coruscant mercenaries consisted of Human, Ishi Tib, Nikto, and Rodian assassins. They operated on the planet of Coruscant, which served as the capital of the Galactic Republic, in the decade prior to the outbreak of the Clone Wars.
Operating within Galactic City around 32 BBY, the Coruscant mercenaries were engaged by the Trade Federation with the task of kidnapping Padmé Amidala. At the time, she was the reigning Queen of Naboo during the organization's invasion of her homeworld. Beyond simply taking the Queen as a hostage, the assassins were also tasked with eliminating her protectors, who were two Knights belonging to the Jedi Order.
The mercenaries meticulously planned their assault, dividing themselves into two distinct teams. The first team launched an ambush against Queen Amidala and her security captain, Quarsh Panaka, as they were en route to meet Senator Palpatine at the Senate Building. Captain Panaka successfully defended the Queen, despite her brief capture and assault by hover cannons. Panaka freed her from her temporary confinement in the undercity, preparing for their return to the surface. However, the Sun Guard leader of the mercenary group, clad in black hooded warrior attire and wielding a vibro-ax, confronted the Queen as she was exiting the Underworld. Captain Panaka engaged this final assassin in combat, ultimately killing him with his R-65 heavy blaster.
Simultaneously, a second team of mercenaries confronted Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi as they escorted Anakin Skywalker to the Jedi Temple. The Jedi defended themselves, killing all of their attackers and subsequently being escorted to the Temple by Master of the Order Mace Windu.
The mercenaries employed a variety of deadly methods, including both hand-to-hand combat and pistol fire. Some also used thermal detonators. Most of the assassins were killed either by the Jedi's lightsabers or by Captain Panaka's assortment of blasters.
