Flame battle droid

The flame battle droid, a creation of the Trade Federation, was a version of the B1-series battle droid that was armed with a flamethrower. These droids saw action in both the Invasion of Naboo and the Clone Wars.

Characteristics

Rather than being equipped with blasters, flame battle droids utilized flame jets which were impervious to deflection by a Jedi's lightsaber. The droids had a sizable backpack attached to them, which held the necessary flammable gases. Their plating was tan, and they could be differentiated from their B1-series battle droid counterparts by the red coloring present on the droid's shoulder plates. Their programming directed them to instill terror in defenseless civilians and incinerate residences, harvests, and civic buildings in order to undermine morale. A different model of the flame battle droid existed; this alternative version had blue markings and was armed with a different kind of flamethrower.

History

The Trade Federation manufactured and deployed flame battle droids during the Invasion of Naboo. One such group was stationed at the entrance of the Theed Royal Palace, working alongside a T4 turret droid. They met their destruction at the hands of the Jedi Knights Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Other flame droids were guarding a contingent of Royal Naboo Security Forces pilots. The Trade Federation and the Confederacy of Independent Systems continued to employ flame battle droids throughout the Clone Wars.

Behind the scenes

The flame battle droids made their initial appearance in the 2000 video game Star Wars: Episode I Jedi Power Battles.
