Fourteenth Army

The Fourteenth Army, also called the Red Tails Command, functioned as a Sector Army within both the Republic and later the Imperial forces, tasked with the security of the Tolonda Oversector.

During the Clone Wars period, the 14th Sector Army saw deployment along the Outer Corellian Run, primarily serving as a defensive command element. Its main objective involved safeguarding Rothana, Excarga, and the Rimward approaches leading to Kamino. Furthermore, it provided repeated reinforcements to the 13th Sector Army and successfully defended its designated area of operations by repelling a Separatist offensive at Ryloth.

History

The 14th Sector Army was initially brought into service around 22 BBY, the year that signaled the commencement of a civil war—known as the Clone Wars—between the Galactic Republic and the Separatist Rebellion, alongside nineteen other sector armies. Throughout the Clone Wars conflict, the Fourteenth established its headquarters on the planet of Ryloth and was responsible for the defense of the Tolonda oversector. Command of the Fourteenth was jointly held by an experienced Jedi General and a Governor-General selected by the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic. By 19 BBY, marking the Clone Wars' final year, the Governor-Generals evolved into a permanent class of regional governors known as the Moffs.

As the Clone Wars continued, Chancellor Palpatine elevated Ravik to the position of Moff, granting him control over both the Fourteenth Army and the Tolonda sector. This army played a crucial role in thwarting a CIS assault on Ryloth and consistently bolstering the 13th Sector Army.

Following the conclusion of the Clone Wars, the twenty sector commands of the Old Republic were maintained by the newly-risen Galactic Empire. Under the New Order established by Emperor Palpatine, Ravik was promoted to the rank of Grand Moff and remained in command of the Fourteenth Army. The Imperial Era was largely defined by the Empire's extensive military expansion, leading to a vast army that significantly surpassed its Republic predecessor. Consequently, the total infantry strength of the Fourteenth Army, along with all other sector units, was increased to approximately 1,572,864 troopers, with naturally born individuals constituting the majority as clones gradually became a smaller portion of the forces.

Behind the scenes

The Fourteenth Army received a mention in the 2012 guidebook titled, The Essential Guide to Warfare. According to its co-author, Paul R. Urquhart, the nickname "Red Tails Command" originated from several sources, including the distinctive head-tail colors of the Twi'leks residing in the Tolonda Oversector's capital, and the 2012 historical-fiction movie Red Tails, which depicted the heroic actions of the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. This film was directed and co-written by Star Wars creator George Lucas. Plans were also considered to include a Twi'lek moff in this section, but it was ultimately deemed unsuitable.
