Freliq

Freliq existed as a planet within the Outer Rim Territories, residing specifically within the Calaron sector. This world served as the homeworld for the lepusa, a species of semi-sentient burrowing rodents capable of crafting basic tools. The introduction of non-native grain crops by farmers to Freliq led to initial encounters with the lepusa. Due to their herbivorous diets and burrowing behaviors, these creatures were quickly regarded as pests by the farmers. Yasil Senerio, a local farm manager, once experienced an event where a lepusa rescued their daughter, a story Senerio later shared with the Imperial Investigation Committee on Lepusan Intelligence.

Description

Freliq, a terrestrial planet, was situated in the Freliq system, which itself formed a part of the Calaron sector within the Slice region of the Outer Rim Territories. The planet's landscape was characterized by hills, and its flora included flowers, subterranean vines, and the aforementioned non-native grain crops cultivated by farmers. Freliq's fauna consisted of grubs and the lepusa, which are semi-sentient, herbivorous burrowing rodents.

History

Relations with farmers

The introduction of farmers to Freliq led to interactions with the indigenous lepusa, sparking widespread conflict. The rapid population expansion of these burrowing animals resulted in extensive underground tunnel systems that negatively impacted the soil quality of the farmers' land properties. Approximately two decades after initial contact, the lepusa migrations began to pose a threat to local agricultural activities, as they developed a preference for the imported grain crops.

Further complicating matters were subsequent studies indicating the lepusa's ability to utilize rudimentary tools they created themselves. Some zoologists from the Galactic Empire even suggested that the creatures possessed a basic social structure. These findings were strongly disputed by the planet's farmers, who feared potential economic repercussions if the lepusa were classified as a protected species. Ultimately, a temporary legal order was issued, preventing the farmers from killing the lepusa as pests.

An unexpected help

On one occasion, Jullisa, the daughter of the Freliq farm manager Yasil Senerio, was exploring an abandoned rail track that spanned Veriss Creek. She found herself hanging from a broken beam of the bridge, and her cries for assistance attracted both her father and Lox, who were in the vicinity at the time. A lepusa, which Senerio later believed resided in a nearby burrow, also appeared at the track. After seemingly assessing the situation, it unearthed an underground vine and used it to pull Jullisa to safety.

Senerio later recounted this experience on Freliq as part of formal testimony given to the Imperial Investigation Committee on Lepusan Intelligence. More than twenty decades after the initial discovery of the lepusa, Freliq was also featured in an entry within a holobrochure for the Tagge Holographic Museum on the planet Chandrila, which was dedicated to the creatures.

Inhabitants

Freliq was populated by farmers, many of whom held resentment towards the lepusa for consuming their grain crops, leading them to often kill the creatures as pests until a temporary ban was enacted. Among these farmers were Lox and Yasil Senerio, along with Senerio's daughter, Jullisa. Senerio, however, held a more favorable view of the lepusa.

Locations

The North Ridge Sector was one of the areas on Freliq. It contained a field situated in its northern portion, and an abandoned railway line crossed Veriss Creek nearby.

Behind the scenes

Freliq was initially referenced in the 1994 sourcebook titled Creatures of the Galaxy, specifically within the short accompanying story "In The Eye Of The Beholder" written by Rick D. Stuart. This book was released by West End Games for use with Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas located the Freliq system, and therefore the planet itself, within grid square U-9.
