The garbage worm, a bioengineered entity, held a crucial, albeit basic, role in Coruscant's waste management infrastructure. Trash unsuitable for orbital disposal underwent a process of oil mixing before being fed to these worms. These organisms digested the waste, breaking it down into minute pellets and extracting residual organic matter, plastic, and recyclable metals. Subsequently, they transformed vast quantities of these pellets into byproducts such as carbon dioxide, methane, and other organic compounds.
The garbage stratum of the ecumenopolis was teeming with these worms, numbering in the thousands, possibly millions. Collectors highly valued their shimmering, loosely attached, glass-esque scales. The largest of these worms could reach lengths of several hundred meters, with a diameter of three to four meters. Distinctive rows of small, blue-black eyes marked their bodies.
There was a widespread belief that a garbage worm could ingest a defunct hyperdrive core and remain alive—though only for a brief seconds.
These organisms were also present on Raxus Prime, and were similarly utilized on Belsavis.
These organisms were integral to unsanctioned garbage pit racing, a competition where participants were tasked with retrieving a scale from a worm and returning it to the finish line. Their scales were also highly sought-after sports collectibles within the racing community.
