The giant dianoga was a massive dianoga that lived in the sewers beneath the galactic capital city of Coruscant, circa 4 ABY.
Only a single specimen of this creature was documented in galactic history up to the time of the Galactic Empire. It made its home in a chamber of the sewers directly below the lobby of the opulent palace belonging to the influential Prince Xizor on Coruscant. In 4 ABY, when a Rebel Alliance team, led by the famous rebel pilot and Jedi trainee Luke Skywalker, attempted to enter the palace through the sewers, the dianoga met its end at the hands of smuggler Dash Rendar after he found himself stuck in the monster's lair. Rendar defeated it by targeting and shooting its prominent eyestalk.
The giant dianoga's sole appearance was in the video game adaptation of Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, where it served as the boss for the "Sewers of Imperial City" level. Given that the game's narrative directly contradicted the source material, it is debatable whether Dash's encounter with this beast is considered canon within the Legends continuity. However, this does not necessarily invalidate the species' canonical status.
