With his lightsaber, Luke Skywalker defends himself against a dianoga. A network of underground tunnels called the Sewers of Coruscant was located on the planet Coruscant. These sewers provided connections and entry points to various buildings across Coruscant, including Xizor's Palace. The Red Guard maintained a strong presence, heavily guarding the sewers. The waters within were home to Dianogas. Rumor had it that a giant dianoga dwelled in one of the primary chambers.
Before the Battle over Coruscant occurred, Luke Skywalker, Dash Rendar, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, and Benedict Vidkun utilized the sewers as a means of infiltrating Xizor's Palace.
The Shadows of the Empire multimedia project introduced the sewers for the very first time across its various narratives. The video game takes a different approach, depicting the Millennium Falcon and the Outrider flying and making landings throughout the sewer system. Subsequently, the team divides, navigating the tunnels in search of Leia, while Dash Rendar deploys pulse bombs to create a distraction for their escape.
Before the Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire video game included the sewers, Bill Stoneham, a 3D artist, developed 3D concept art for them. The initial concept drew inspiration from the sewers featured in the Phantom of the Opera, envisioning a Gothic style with rib vaults and Gargoyles.
Chris Hockabout, a texture artist, found inspiration in a past boat excursion through the shadowy, labyrinthine sewers of Prague.
