Gilp was a student, specifically a Jedi Initiate, learning at the Jedi Order's academy located within the Coruscant Temple during the period known as the Clone Wars.
As an individual Force-sensitive, Gilp was brought into the Jedi Order and underwent training to learn about the Force at the Coruscant Jedi Temple. When the Clone Wars began, pitting the Galactic Republic against the Confederacy of Independent Systems, Gilp stayed at the Temple and took part in the Jedi Temple Apprentice Tournament that occurred in 19 BBY. Overseen by Master Ilena Xan, Gilp competed against another Initiate named Page.
The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia not only included an entry for Gilp, but also incorrectly merged Gilp's name with that of Padawan Page in Page's entry, identifying the latter as "Page, Glip." In the novel Yoda: Dark Rendezvous, Master Ilena Xan announces the names of the Padawan pairs who are about to engage in duels. Each pair is identified by surname alone; for example, "Flerp, Zrim" and "Page, Gilp." Subsequently, Xan calls out, "Chizzik, Enwandung-Esterhazy," offering definitive proof to the reader that only surnames were being utilized.
