Gin Clarke

title: Gin Clarke

Gin Clarke, occasionally credited simply as Gin, is a former English model who also worked as an actress. She appeared in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, and footage of her was reused in Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones.

Clarke's professional life started when Jean-Paul Gaultier, a French designer, discovered her during a London visit. Subsequently, she became a model, leveraging her height, athletic build, and shaved head to gain prominence throughout Europe. Her appearance was replicated by several young black models, especially in the UK. Throughout the mid-1990s, numerous bald black women were working as models.

Following her modeling career, she transitioned to acting. Her initial acting role was in The Fifth Element, where she portrayed Diva Plavalaguna's assistant.

Afterward, she was chosen to portray one of the Jedi Masters in The Phantom Menace, using only the name Gin professionally. Master Adi Gallia wore distinctive headgear, concealing Clarke's bald head. She quickly became a popular character among fans and was among the first Jedi Masters without spoken lines to have her own action figure (at a time when action figures contained a chip to recite lines from the films).

Clarke was not chosen to reprise her role in Attack of the Clones. Lily Nyamwasa, who bore some resemblance to Clarke, was chosen to play Adi Gallia. Despite wearing the same costume, it was ultimately determined that she looked too dissimilar to Gallia. Consequently, Nyamwasa was recast as a new character named Stass Allie, a relative of Adi Gallia.
