Gozanti-class cruiser

The Gozanti-class cruiser, alternatively referred to as the Gozanti-class armored cruiser, Gozanti-class armed transport, or simply Gozanti Cruiser, represented a deliberately slow but formidably armed independent transport crafted by the Corellian Engineering Corporation.

Renowned for its power and reliability, the Gozanti earned the moniker of a "flying fortress," emphasizing its construction focused on resilience and offensive capabilities rather than maximizing cargo space or achieving high speeds.

While conceived by the Corellian Engineering Corporation, actual production was limited at CEC; instead, the design was licensed out to numerous other manufacturers for construction, notably Gallofree Yards, Inc.

Initially manufactured during the era of the Old Republic, the vessel's speed was intentionally limited to reassure Republic Inspectors that it could not be effectively utilized as a pirate vessel. Although various independent entities, including the Hutts and several crime lords, employed the ship, it was never directly involved in acts of piracy.

Enhanced performance could be achieved with some effort, leading to many Gozantis being converted into effective warships by the resource-constrained Rebellion throughout the duration of the Galactic Civil War. Rebellion engineers upgraded many of them to a standard that allowed them to function with notable effectiveness in modern combat scenarios. Ultimately, the Rebellion utilized Gozantis as escort vessels, consistent with their original intent, and as makeshift capital ships when critically needed.

These well-armored ships presented significant boarding challenges, much to the frustration of numerous space pirates, and featured unusually robust armor plating and hull reinforcement. Equipped with heavy, retractable weaponry, which included four laser cannons, two quad laser cannon turrets, and a proton torpedo launcher, the Gozanti was more than capable of dealing with casual pirates who used inferior technology and refitted transports.

Predominantly utilized by merchants, militaries, and mercenaries across the galaxy for the protection of cargo vessels against piracy, some Gozantis served as diplomatic vessels and were favored as mobile command centers. When a Gozanti did end up in the possession of a criminal organization, it was invariably repurposed as a prison ship or a highly secure personal transport due to its speed.

These cruisers had the capacity to transport twelve passengers, and the standard crew complement included a pilot, co-pilot, communications/sensor operator, two loadmasters, and six gunners.

History

Initially produced during the time of the Galactic Republic, the design lost favor with shipyards during the Galactic Empire's reign. However, in the aftermath of the post-Endor collapse of Imperial central authority, the demand for heavily armed and armored civilian vessels experienced a surge, leading to the Gozanti being rapidly reintroduced into production and enjoying renewed popularity.

The Krayt's Honor stood out as a famous Gozanti Cruiser, well-known for its employment by freelancers who provided protection to merchants who were being harassed by the Trade Federation. In the years leading up to the Clone Wars, it was frequently observed in the spaceport of Mos Espa on Tatooine.

During the Clone Wars, the Confederacy of Independent Systems militarized Gozanti cruisers and employed them as support vessels. These ships were painted in the Separatist faction's colors. Several ships served in the fleet of the super tactical droid Aut-O. The Black Sun criminal syndicate modified Gozantis and used them as frigates. After the takeover of Mandalore by the Shadow Collective, both Separatist and Black Sun Gozantis were observed utilizing the city of Sundari as a stopover location.

Behind the scenes

Star Wars Insider 63 erroneously identifies both the Gozanti Cruiser and the Taylander shuttle as "Brocklander ships." Star Wars Insider 65 rectifies this error, clarifying that "Brocklander" was merely a production nickname.
