Grant Feely

Grant Feely is an actor by profession. He portrays a young Luke Skywalker in the television program Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Biography

Born on October 15, 2011, Grant Feely hails from Brunswick, Georgia. At the age of seven, his interest in acting sparked after watching Stranger Things and exploring its behind-the-scenes content. This led him to pursue acting. Prior to his role, The Mandalorian was the only Star Wars media he had consumed. In April, 2021, his agent submitted him for an audition. He recorded an audition for a project called "Boy - Untitled Disney+ Series," unaware that it was for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, and didn't give it much thought. A week later, he had a callback via Zoom lasting an hour with Carmen Cuba, the casting director for Obi-Wan Kenobi. The following day, Cuba requested all of Feely's previous auditions during another Zoom meeting, making him realize the significance of the role. In early June, he had a callback with the director, Deborah Chow. While vacationing in Hawaii at the end of June, he received a request to come to Los Angeles. Unable to travel, they flew him to LA for an in-person audition with Chow. In early July, Chow contacted Feely, offering him the part of Luke Skywalker. For approximately nine months, Feely kept his casting a secret, sharing it only with his immediate family.

Feely was eager to prepare for his role, but Chow advised him against watching any Star Wars films. She wanted him to portray Skywalker as a regular boy, rather than imitating Mark Hamill's performance from the original trilogy. Chow clarified that Skywalker doesn't discover the Force until he is around twenty. Feely mentioned that crafting was his most enjoyable on-set activity. He was not informed about Skywalker or any other character's background in the series. Feely developed a bond with Joel Edgerton, who played Owen Lars. During the filming process, Chow would direct Feely on how to perform a shot, and Edgerton would then rephrase the directions in a way Feely could easily understand.

During the filming of the scene where Skywalker is pursued by the Inquisitor Reva in the rocks, Feely was suspended in a harness, running along the set's top. The crew wanted to test his running distance on a specific wire, instructing him to step onto a nearby boulder. The harness quickly pulled Feely back, startling the crew but amusing Feely. While Feely and Moses Ingram, who played Reva, were in the cast room, Ingram suggested he ask the props department to see a lightsaber. Feely and his mother went to the props department, where he received a red lightsaber. The lightsaber was then changed to blue, and Feely posed for photos with it. Feely's favorite aspect of playing the character was the connections he made and the overall experience. After filming the series, Feely watched all the Star Wars films and became a devoted fan.
