The Gungan Caves, located on Naboo, represented a network of man-made caverns, likely constructed by the Elders. These caves housed venerable golden statues. In approximately 32 BBY, a fresh, inexperienced member of the Jedi Order journeyed to Naboo with the mission of retrieving these statues.
The Gungan Caves presented a complex labyrinth of subterranean passages, partially submerged beneath water. At the heart of the cave system, a central, circular space contained four doors, each secured and guarding access to the revered statues. To unlock each door, one had to find and use ten jeweled keys, which were dispersed across the entirety of the cave network. Etchings on each of the doors portrayed Naboo's native fauna, specifically a shaak, a kaadu, an opee sea killer, and a peko-peko.
