Hôtel Sidi Driss

A map displaying the location of Matmata The celebrated Star Wars hotel, Hôtel Sidi Driss, is situated in Matmata, Tunisia, and has gained renown as a prominent filming location for Star Wars. Constructed centuries ago as a typical Berber dwelling, it became the Lars homestead on Tatooine. The exterior shots were captured 300 kilometers to the west, at Chott el Jerid. Following the initial movie, A New Hope, the set decorations were removed, but they were completely reconstructed in 2000 for the production of Attack of the Clones. The hotel remains open throughout the year, and the decorations are still present. The hotel features five pits, with four containing guest rooms, and the fifth, known as the Star Wars pit, serving as the hotel's dining establishment. Although overnight stays within the set are prohibited, visitors can enjoy a meal in the same space as featured in the film.

The Lars Family Dining Area

Philip Vanni in Lars dining room

For many years, the fresco in the Lars dining area was concealed beneath numerous layers of quick lime applied by the proprietor. In 1995, Philip Vanni, a dedicated French enthusiast, undertook a restoration project, meticulously recreating the movie's theme by removing the lime and reapplying the designs with a brush. He was also instrumental in refurbishing the room to match its appearance in the film. Consequently, visitors can now dine in the Lars dining room, which previously functioned as a storage area before 1995.
