Hala

A Human female known as Hala lived as a slave on Tatooine during the closing years of the Galactic Republic, prior to the outbreak of the Clone Wars. Amee was her daughter, and a close companion of Anakin Skywalker. Her owner was Yor Millto.

Biography

Hala was captured during a slave raid conducted by the pirate [Krayn]. She displayed a defiant attitude towards the slavelord, which resulted in her murder. Krayn then took a small necklace with a silver bell from her body and wore it as a trophy. Anakin Skywalker later recognized this bell when he was taken prisoner by Krayn in 29 BBY. The sight of the crime lord wearing the trinket on his belt revealed the tragic meaning behind it, which infuriated the young Anakin Skywalker.

Skywalker exacted revenge for Hala's death by confronting Krayn during the slave's rebellious uprising as he fled. The Jedi Padawan ran his recently built lightsaber through the pirate.

Behind the scenes

The Jedi Quest comics depict Hala's bell as gold, a departure from the original silver bell described in Jude Watson's story, Jedi Quest: Path to Truth. However, the comics' alteration of the bell connects it to the bell from Anakin's Force vision at the Ilum temple before he constructs his first lightsaber. In both versions of the story, the same gold bell that Hala wears around her neck in the comics is the bell from Skywalker's Crystal Caves vision. This bell rings musically, rolls to the Padawan's feet, and then blood pours out, covering the boy's boots. Intriguingly, the comics' depiction of Hala wearing the shining bell around her neck is rendered in tones that suggest blood-red.
