Holocron Vault

The Holocron Vault was a highly secure room situated within the Jedi Archives, which themselves were located deep inside the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. This chamber, along with the Vault in the Tower of First Knowledge, served as a repository where the Jedi Order kept its collection of holocrons.

History

The Chief Librarian was responsible for guarding the Order's holocrons, which were housed in the Holocron Vault and the vaults within the Tower of First Knowledge. Access to Sith holocrons was restricted to Jedi Masters only, but security measures were initially lax. However, security was increased after Lorian Nod, a Padawan, stole one of these holocrons. Following the "Lorian Nod affair," holocrons containing the most guarded knowledge of Force Masters were protected in a way that only Jedi Masters could gain access.

During the Clone Wars in 22 BBY, Darth Sidious contracted Cad Bane, a Duros bounty hunter, to break into the Temple's holocron vault in the Archives' Fourth Hall and steal a holocron. Bane murdered Jedi Ord Enisence and then employed Cato Parasitti, a Clawdite bounty hunter, to impersonate the Skrilling Jedi. Parasitti, disguised as Master Enisence and equipped with Temple schematics provided by the Sith Lord, gained entry to the Temple Archives to guide Bane through the ventilation system. Although the Jedi detected the intrusion, they were unable to determine the intruder's target. The Jedi were distracted and rushed around the Temple, allowing Bane to enter the vault undetected. After stealing the artifact, he calmly left the Temple wearing a stolen Jedi robe. Parasitti, however, was abandoned by Bane and apprehended by the Jedi.

The four Vaults were located on the perimeters of the Second and Fourth Halls of the Archives and were secured by two dilating security doors. A circular hallway filled with motion-detecting security lasers and alarms was located between the two doors. Access to the chamber was regulated by a Force-activated lock, and only the twelve Jedi Masters on the Jedi High Council or the five members of the Council of First Knowledge could enter. Each pair of Vaults was also linked by a laser-crossed hallway in addition to the external entrances.

Beyond the security hall was a circular chamber illuminated by the soft blue light emanating from the holocrons. The holocrons were stored in dilating wall niches, and the chamber also featured a central pillar filled with the palm-sized artifacts.
