Hortath

Hortath, sometimes spelled Hartoth, was a benevolent Jedi Master who lived before the Great Sith War. In his later years, his eyesight began to fail, but his arrogance prevented him from acknowledging it or seeking help. Consequently, he frequently collided with objects, stumbled into walls, and confused Padawans with threatening creatures.

One widespread, though unsubstantiated, tale tells of a Padawan who sought directions to the Enclave council on Dantooine from Master Hortath, only to be given incorrect instructions. When the Padawan pointed out the mistake, the Master stubbornly refused to accept it. The Padawan then attempted to seek guidance from another source, but Hortath took offense and commanded the Padawan to follow his route exclusively. The outcome was that the Padawan not only strayed from the council's location, but ultimately abandoned the Jedi Order altogether. Perhaps out of deference to Master Hortath, the Council concluded that the boy's destiny was to depart from the Jedi Order regardless.

Many years after this, Jolee Bindo recounted the anecdote of Master Hortath to Revan, when asked about the reasons for his own departure from the Order. Nevertheless, he confessed to Revan that his departure and the story of Master Hortath were not actually connected; the events involving the Padawan and Hortath occurred before his time. He also clarified that he did not truly leave the Order, stating that "It left me."
