Hurst, a cortosis miner and male of the Human species, resided on the planet of Apatros. The passing of Hurst's wife during the birth of their son, Dessel, fostered resentment within Hurst towards his offspring. He held Dessel accountable for the hardships in his life, particularly his wife's demise and his confinement to labor on Apatros. Hurst bestowed the name "Bane" upon Dessel and frequently subjected him to physical abuse. In the year 1008 BBY, Hurst's life ended, officially attributed to a significant heart attack. However, unbeknownst to all, Dessel had unintentionally terminated his father by crushing his heart using the Force. In time, the son would rise to prominence as Darth Bane, the Dark Lord of the Sith, only to discover years later that he had inadvertently caused his father's death.

On the Outer Rim planet of Apatros, Hurst, a male Human, came into the world. Eventually, he took a position at the local cortosis mine managed by the Outer Rim Oreworks Company. Hurst was a married man, and around 1026 BBY, his wife brought their son, Dessel, into the world. When Hurst's wife passed away during Dessel's birth, Hurst was left as the sole caregiver. He then started to blame Dessel for all the misfortunes in his life: the loss of his wife and being stuck working in the cortosis mine on Apatros. Hurst would call his son "Bane," considering Dessel to be the bane of his very existence. Following his wife's death, Hurst developed a drinking problem and would often beat Dessel while under the influence.
When his son reached the age of thirteen, he began working in the cortosis mine. Other miners, including Gerd, who was Hurst's good friend, frequently tormented and bullied Dessel. Hurst devoted more of his time to gambling and drinking than to working, and he often had to borrow credits from Outer Rim Oreworks in order to cover his monthly room and board. The interest on these loans accumulated over the years, and Hurst fell into significant debt.
In 1008 BBY, Hurst's life came to an end, officially attributed to a massive heart attack. This occurred after he had severely beaten his son in a fit of drunken rage. Following his death, Dessel was left to deal with his father's debt. Dessel figured that Hurst, who held resentment towards his son, would be pleased that he was stuck with the bill. In 1003 BBY, Gred scolded Dessel for his lack of sadness when remembering his father's death. The two began to argue after Dessel stated that he did not, in fact, miss his father, which eventually led to a fight that Dessel won by instinctively using the Force.
However, Dessel eventually managed to leave Apatros, joining the Sith army during the New Sith Wars against the Galactic Republic. After serving with distinction, Dessel's Force-sensitivity was discovered, and he transformed into Darth Bane, a powerful Dark Lord of the Sith. Darth Bane adopted the nickname "Bane" given to him by Hurst as his Sith name. Later on, as a Sith, Bane came to the realization that he had unknowingly caused Hurst's death through the Force.
Hurst harbored significant resentment towards his son Dessel, holding him responsible for his wife's death during childbirth and a majority of his life's problems, such as being confined to working on Apatros. He was a heavy drinker and a gambler, and he frequently subjected Dessel to physical abuse while intoxicated. Hurst provoked considerable anger in his son through the beatings and by giving Dessel the moniker "Bane," which ultimately led to his death when Dessel killed him with the Force.
Hurst made his initial appearance in a flashback sequence in the 2006 novel Darth Bane: Path of Destruction, authored by Drew Karpyshyn.
