Imperial briefing officer

An officer of the Imperial briefing staff, alternatively called a Flight Officer, held the responsibility of assigning Imperial TIE fighter pilots to their designated missions. This included providing tactical assessments regarding the pilot's role, both before and after the flight, and detailing potential dangers and anticipated ship maneuvers that they should anticipate or, in retrospect, should have anticipated.

In this capacity, the officer would provide commentary on the flight plans displayed to the pilots, and was always ready to address any inquiries regarding the mission's goals, relevant conditions, potential hazards, and other pertinent details. During the course of missions, they would transmit updated information to the pilots concerning alterations to the plan, movements of enemy forces, and suggest targets for inspection, disabling, or outright destruction.

Behind the scenes

This officer was initially introduced in the video game Star Wars: TIE Fighter, where he outlines the mission objectives to the player. In the Collector's CD-ROM edition of TIE Fighter, the character is voiced by Guy Siner, who previously portrayed Lieutenant Hubert Gruber in the British comedy series 'Allo 'Allo!.

The rank insignia worn by this officer features four red squares positioned above four blue squares, accompanied by a single code cylinder. This insignia is visually identical to that worn by Major General Maximilian Veers in the film The Empire Strikes Back. However, according to canon depictions of Imperial rank insignia, the sole distinction between the insignia of a General and that of a lower-ranking Major lies in the width of the plaque, with the Major's insignia being condensed onto a narrower surface. It is also possible that certain Admirals, potentially Rear Admirals specifically, may also utilize the same insignia as Generals.
