Internal Safeguards Division
The Internal Safeguards Division (ISD), alternatively called the Imperial Safeguards Division, functioned as a department within the Imperial Military with the responsibility of guaranteeing the safety of Emperor Palpatine during his travels throughout the galaxy. Despite an Imperial decree that prohibited their usage following the rise of the New Order in 19 BBY, rumors persisted that it employed assassin droids to maintain the galaxy's "cleanliness" up until 0 ABY according to the year system.
According to certain accounts, droids belonging to the Division carried out one-third of all top-secret, high-ranking ISD arrests and eliminations, although an agent was nearly always present at the location. It remained uncertain if the Internal Safeguards Division's utilization of assassin droids was officially approved or if it was a covert practice employed by departments hesitant to relinquish them.
Behind the scenes
The Internal Safeguards Division was initially referenced in The Star Wars Sourcebook, a 1987 Star Wars Legends reference book authored by Bill Slavicsek and Curtis Smith for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game.
