A naturally occurring electrical event in space was known as an ion storm. It was hazardous to pilot a starship through an ion storm because the unpredictable nature of the lightning strikes made navigation difficult. The Spectres, on one occasion, attempted to evade an Imperial flotilla by flying into an ion storm. During this maneuver, the rebel ship known as the Ghost sustained damage from a lightning strike, affecting its engines, targeting systems, and turbolasers. The rebels managed to repair these systems just in the nick of time, allowing them to shake off their pursuers.
