During the final years of the Galactic Republic, Jafer Torles served the Jedi Order as a Jedi Knight who was a male Human. Torles, a Jedi Watchman, spent three decades watching over the Prackla sector from his post on Cartao.
In 94 BBY, Jafer Torles was discovered to be sensitive to the Force, and subsequently, he was brought to the Jedi Temple's academy on Coruscant for training. After dedicating years to his studies at the academy and later as a Padawan, Torles constructed his own lightsaber with a blue blade and successfully completed his Trials of Knighthood. Having achieved the rank of Jedi Knight, Torles chose the path of the Jedi Sentinel, and following extensive independent study, he was appointed as the Watchman of the Prackla sector in 51 BBY.

Jedi Torles made Cartao his home, diligently monitoring the sector and engaging with its inhabitants to ensure their needs were met in the most effective manner possible. Serving as a mediator and local judge, Torles earned the reverence of the region's people, who saw him as the quintessential Jedi, a reputation he personally disliked and actively tried to discourage. One such admirer was a young man named Corf Binalie, who idolized the Jedi throughout his formative years. When the Clone Wars broke out between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, Separatist forces set their sights on Cartao. During their invasion of the planet, Torles spearheaded the resistance to defend the world's Spaarti Creations facility. When the Grand Army of the Republic arrived to reinforce Jedi Torles, he collaborated with Commander Roshton and the double agent Kinman Doriana in an attempt to drive back the Separatists. However, in the tragic aftermath of the battle, a Republic gunship crashed into the main Spaarti Creations facility, resulting in its destruction and devastating the planet's economy. Upon learning that the Jedi Knights were allegedly responsible for ordering the suicide mission, Torles found himself ostracized and rejected by his former allies, including the young Binalie. The disillusioned Jedi departed the planet and returned to Coruscant, determined to identify and bring to justice the Jedi who had authorized the devastating strike.
