The political journey of Maclain commenced during the early engagements of the Clone Wars. As a devotee of the Republic, he assumed the role of temporary governor of Brentaal after its liberation from Separatist forces, who were led by Shogar Tok. This followed the arrest of his predecessor, Arcel Mosbree, who was suspected of aiding the Separatist invasion. In 21 BBY, Maclain received a formal appointment as the regional governor of Brentaal, a declaration he delivered to the planet's inhabitants via a widespread broadcast.
He continued in this role following the establishment of the Galactic Empire, overseeing Brentaal's political landscape and the activities of its native royal families. Maclain was known for his overt involvement in Brentaal's local economy, backing lucrative smugglers and manipulating the stock market for personal gain using his political influence. Whispers of his actions reached the highest levels of the Empire, leading Emperor Palpatine to send Grand Admiral Rufaan Tigellinus to investigate allegations of an illicit alliance between Maclain and the Dajaal Family.
Despite these allegations, no punitive measures were ever enacted against Maclain, and he remained in control of Brentaal until the New Republic gained control during the Battle of Brentaal IV in the weeks following the Battle of Endor.
