The dwelling, once the abode of Kento Marek and Mallie, a married couple who were both Jedi Knights in their past lives, was situated within a Wookiee settlement on the world of Kashyyyk. Galen Marek, their son, spent his early years in this dwelling until both his parents met their end. His mother was killed in a battle with a group of Trandoshans; his father was slain by the Sith Lord Darth Vader inside their home, where Vader became aware of Galen's existence. Detecting the young orphan's strong connection to the Force, Vader removed Marek from his home and mentored him to become a Sith assassin.

The Marek family's home was located on the Wookiee's native planet of Kashyyyk. Kento Marek, a former Jedi General during the Clone Wars, abandoned the Jedi Order and entered into marriage with Mallie, another Jedi Knight who was a Human woman. To escape the conflict, the pair went into hiding, eventually settling on Kashyyyk, where Mallie gave birth to Galen Marek. Throughout the early years of the Great Jedi Purge, the family lived under the protection of the Wookiees, while the remaining Jedi were being hunted down across the galaxy by the newly established Galactic Empire.
The hut was the Marek family's residence until Mallie was killed while defending the Wookiees against Trandoshan hunters. Her husband and son remained on Kashyyyk until Imperial forces launched a large-scale invasion of the planet. During the fighting, Darth Vader, the Sith Lord, engaged Kento Marek in combat and killed him. Vader also found Galen, whose strong connection to the Force led the Dark Lord to train the boy as his secret apprentice.
Years later, Galen Marek, by that point a Sith assassin known as Starkiller, came across the remains of his former home. Even though he had long forgotten his past, the apprentice experienced a Force vision of the events surrounding the fall of Kashyyyk and his Master's role in Kento Marek's death.
In 2 BBY, the hut was the location where the Alliance to Restore the Republic was officially recognized in defiance of the Empire. Leia Organa, a Senator, suggested that the Alliance adopt the Marek family crest as their symbol, which she described as a sign of hope for the galactic population, as a tribute to the apprentice, who died for the Rebellion as a redeemed Jedi.
