The role of Kicker was one of the half-dozen player roles in the game of grav-ball. This was a highly specialized position, and the kicker would generally spend most of the grav-ball match on the bench. They would be brought into the game when their team needed to score via a kick or perform a trap-kick, and they would kick the ball as far as possible down the grid towards the opposing team. The role demanded someone who could kick the ball a great distance.
Merei Spanjaf was selected for the kicker position on the AppSci SaberCats team, the same team where Zare Leonis was assigned the role of center striker. Their shared experience playing grav-ball led to a close friendship between the two.
