Grav-ball was a well-known sport all across the galaxy. Lothal was a planet where the sport was frequently played, and it was very popular at the Junior Academy of Applied Sciences. The academy even had a team called the AppSci SaberCats. Zare Leonis was chosen to be the team's center striker while he was a student there, and his girlfriend, Merei Spanjaf, played the position of kicker.
Although some versions of the game involved the use of hover boots during gameplay, they were not permitted under Corellian rules or on Lothal, the planet. During the eras of the Resistance and First Order, young people often collected grav-ball badges as a hobby. Cutar Har, a grav-ball champion, was rumored to have died in the Turclom Riots.
Grav-ball consisted of multiple positions: a center striker, a pair of strikers, wing attackers, a kicker, two fullbacks, a pair of defenders, and a keeper. There were several different rule sets for the game, including the Corellian rules. It was played on a grid measuring 64-meters, which was divided into eight octets. The team that would begin at the center line, which separated the fourth and fifth octets, was determined by the roll of a chance cube.

Grav-ball was initially introduced in the comic X-Wing Rogue Squadron 25 and was subsequently included in various other stories within the Star Wars Legends continuity. Despite these stories no longer being considered canon, grav-ball was featured in the Star Wars Rebels story Servants of the Empire: Edge of the Galaxy. This story provided a comprehensive description of the sport and portrayed grav-ball matches. The author of the title described the sport as being "like American football with a bit of net-ball and a touch of hockey." He also mentioned that he chose not to include hover boots in the sport to avoid making it feel overly "spacey."
