Within the Star Wars Legends continuity, grav-ball was consistently depicted as being played with the use of hover boots. Conversely, Jason Fry believed that this "futuristic" element was unsuitable for the narrative of Servants of the Empire: Edge of the Galaxy, leading him to create an alternative version of the game that excluded the need for such boots.
