Junior Academy of Applied Sciences

The Junior Academy of Applied Sciences, often shortened to AppSci, served as an educational institution within the Capital City of Lothal. During the Galactic Empire's rule, students such as Zare Leonis, Merei Spanjaf, and Beck Ollet were enrolled there, a few years prior to the significant Battle of Yavin. The academy gained recognition for its competitive grav-ball, chin-bret, and athletic track and field programs. Furthermore, Junior AppSci was utilized by the Academy for Young Imperials as a source to scout potential Imperial cadets.

History

Approximately four decades before Zare Leonis and his family relocated to Lothal, Janus Fhurek participated on Junior AppSci's grav-ball team. He maintained the school's record for completed passes until an Alien surpassed it several years prior. Fhurek's skill on the grav-ball field led to the moniker "Fury Fhurek." At some point, Fhurek transitioned into the role of the school's athletic director. By the time of the Age of the Empire, Junior AppSci had become famous in Capital City for its programs in grav-ball, chin-bret, and track and field. In addition, the institution was used to instill the values of the Empire's New Order in the young citizens of Lothal. The academy also functioned as a recruiting hub for agricultural experts and Imperial cadets destined for the Academy for Young Imperials.

Merei Spanjaf relocated from Corulag to attend Junior AppSci one year before Zare established himself on Lothal, and she subsequently became a member of the school's grav-ball squad, known as the AppSci SaberCats. That spring, Beck Ollet, a Lothalian of the third generation, became a student at Junior AppSci following his family's move from the Westhills to Capital City. He joined the AppSci SaberCats and took on the role of the team's fullback player. As center striker, Zare guided the AppSci SaberCats to victories in a string of games during the fall and winter seasons. After Fhurek moved the team's two alien players, Frid Kelio and Hench Sina, to the Technical Institute for Agricultural Research to prevent them from participating in the final grav-ball tournament, relations between Leonis and Fhurek, the school's athletic director, became tense. After Zare sabotaged Fhurek's bet that the AppSci SaberCats would win in the final tournament by a margin of eight points, Fhurek excluded him from any spring sports events.

Following his graduation in spring, Zare enrolled in the Academy for Young Imperials with the intention of locating his missing sister, Dhara Leonis. Concurrently, Beck Ollet became involved with a resistance group, but he was apprehended by Imperial forces after an attempt to detonate a mine. The following year, Merei, another former AppSci student, enrolled in the Vocational School for Institutional Security to continue her family's work as a data-security expert. After seeing two Junior AppSci girls selling raffle tickets to raise money for a camping trip, Merei decided to pose as a schoolgirl doing fundraising work in order to infiltrate the Transportation Ministry's headquarters on Lothal as part of her efforts to find Dhara.

Curriculum and sports

Junior AppSci provided a range of courses, notably Current Events, a mandatory class taught by Mister Tralls, along with several agricultural science courses like Crop Management and nerf-herding. The Academy also had a grav-ball team, the SaberCats, led by the Duros coach Ramset, who was well-known for his traditional methods. Grav-ball was usually played during the autumn and winter seasons. Some well-known members of the SaberCats included Zare Leonis, Merei Spanjaf, Beck Ollet, Frid Kelio, and [Hench Sina](/article/hench_sina]. The school also had chin-bret and track and field programs, which were played during the Spring season. Janus Fhurek served as the athletic director and held more sway than the school's headmaster. Fhurek maintained strong ties with the local Imperial Academy located in Capital City and assisted in identifying potential cadets.

Campus
