Ramset, affectionately called "Ramsy" by his students, was a senior Duros who served as the coach for the Junior Academy of Applied Sciences' grav-ball squad, known as the AppSci SaberCats. Residing in Capital City on Lothal, an Outer Rim planet under the control of the Galactic Empire, Ramset was recognized for his traditional approach to tactics and strategy. About five years prior to the Battle of Yavin, he maintained a positive relationship with Zare Leonis, a young human who played center striker for the AppSci SaberCats. When Janus Fhurek, the school's athletic director, subjected Zare to harassment, Ramset offered encouragement, reminding Zare of his champion status.
Some years before the Battle of Yavin, Ramset held the position of coach for the AppSci SaberCats. As the school year commenced, Ramset selected Zare Leonis, a recent human immigrant, to be the SaberCats' center-striker. Throughout the grav-ball season, Ramset led the team and guided the players by creating effective strategies. With Ramset's leadership and Leonis's skill, the SaberCats achieved several victories against rival school teams. Throughout the year, Ramset engaged in discussions with Leonis regarding strategies and play-calling.
During an early contest against the West Cap City Carvers, Ramset urged the SaberCats to persevere, ensuring that Merei could execute a successful kick-score. This vital move broke the tie and allowed the SaberCats to triumph over their rivals with a score of 38 to the Carvers' 36. During their fifth match against the East City Brawlers, the SaberCats faced a setback when Beck Ollet, their fullback, lost control and attacked a Brawlers player, leading to a goal deduction. With Ollet removed from the game, Ramset was compelled to substitute him with another fullback.
During the winter season, Ramset celebrated enthusiastically when the SaberCats defeated the South Capital City Volunteers by a significant twelve-point margin. Although Hench Sina, an Aqualish fullback, played a crucial role in securing this victory, Janus Fhurek, the xenophobic athletic director at Junior AppSci, declined to acknowledge his contribution. Subsequently, he informed Coach Ramset and Leonis that Hench, along with Frid Kelio, a Rodian player, had to be removed from the team because their alien appearances gave them an unfair advantage. While Ramset was troubled by Fhurek's demand, he hesitated to challenge the athletic director due to his connections with the Academy for Young Imperials. Despite his reservations, he deferred the decision to Leonis.
Leonis chose to keep Hench and Frid on the team. In response, Fhurek reassigned the two alien players to the Technical Institute for Agricultural Research, preventing them from participating in the final tournament. After Leonis and his girlfriend Merei Spanjaf learned that Fhurek had placed a bet that the SaberCats would win the final grav-ball tournament by eight points without alien assistance, Leonis skillfully guided the team to a six-point victory over the Kothal Roughnecks. In retaliation, Fhurek penalized Leonis with demerits for minor infractions.
When Leonis confronted the coach, Ramset admitted that Fhurek had instructed him to issue the demerits. As Ramset was coaching the chin-bret and track and field teams during the spring term, Leonis sought to participate in one of these sports. However, Ramset regretfully informed him that the teams were at full capacity. Leonis quickly realized that Fhurek was deliberately making things difficult for him. Before Leonis departed, Ramset reassured the grav-ball player, urging him to remember his status as a champion.
Although Coach Ramset was a competent coach, his conservative methods of play-calling were a source of frustration for Leonis and Merei Spanjaf, both recent arrivals from the Core Worlds whose grav-ball playing style differed from that prevalent on Lothal. Nevertheless, they respected him enough to adhere to his leadership. As a Duros, Ramset was deeply disturbed when Fhurek, the xenophobic athletic director at Junior AppSci, advocated for the removal of the SaberCat's two alien players, Hench and Frid, on the basis that some grav-ball fans believed their alien appearances gave them an unfair edge. However, he was unwilling to jeopardize his employment by opposing the well-connected athletic director. In addition to coaching the school's grav ball team, Ramset also coached the chin-bret and track and field teams.
