The Kothal Roughnecks were a grav-ball squad that called the city of Kothal on Lothal their home. Around half a dozen years prior to the Battle of Yavin, this team demonstrated considerable skill within their league, positioning them as a potential champion. Their roster included a formidable fullback named Targol, and an unusually swift Aqualish wing striker, Horst Prajil, whose speed belied his stature. However, Zare Leonis and Merei Spanjaf, who were players for the AppSci SaberCats, a rival team also vying for the league title, believed they had identified a flaw in the Roughnecks' gameplay, specifically a method to exhaust their center striker. Although the Roughnecks started strong, the SaberCats managed a comeback by exploiting this perceived vulnerability. In the end, the SaberCats secured victory with a deliberately narrow six-point lead, a tactic employed by Leonis to frustrate athletic director Janus Fhurek, who had wagered heavily on the SaberCats winning by at least eight points.
