Kyren were relatively diminutive winged beings, yet capable of inflicting fatal wounds, and originated from the world of Ansion.
These creatures were almost entirely black, exhibiting four membranous wings: two larger wings situated at the front of their thorax and two smaller wings positioned at the rear. The kyren employed the upper wings for gliding, while the rear wings provided propulsion. Each wing was marked with a vibrant yellow patch, perhaps serving as a means of identification. Devoid of legs, the kyren instead possessed a pair of substantial, furry protrusions that extended along the length of their underside, functioning similarly to runners on a sled. Given their predominantly airborne existence, legs were largely unnecessary for the kyren.
The mouth of the kyren appeared disproportionately large relative to its body size, featuring a wide opening lined with dual ridges of incredibly sharp horn on both the upper and lower jaws. These ridges were utilized by the kyren as airborne scythes, precisely clipping the tops of mature grains in the plains as they flew. Consequently, the grain fields remained undamaged, with only the ripened seeds harvested, resulting in a perfectly manicured appearance. Kyren migrated seasonally, traveling in massive flocks ranging from 150 million to upwards of 200 million individuals, creating a dark eclipse effect for those on the ground as they passed overhead.
Kyren flocks, seemingly unable or unwilling to deviate from their course, did not avoid obstacles in their path. Despite their herbivorous diet, they posed a significant threat to any creature unable to find adequate shelter. They emitted a piercing screech and were known to have a very unpleasant odor. Despite the numerous deaths during migration, they were not consumed as food due to their unpalatable taste, described as "like boiled mud. All grease," even after cooking.
In 22 BBY, a Jedi diplomatic team, while engaged in a mission to resolve a border dispute on the planet, persuade all parties to reject secession efforts, and vote to remain in the Galactic Republic, encountered a migrating kyren swarm. The Jedi, their Alwari guides, and their suubatar mounts sought refuge behind native jijite columns until the dangerously indiscriminate (yet self-destructive) avian swarm had moved on.
