The Inspectorate, the investigative body of the Galactic Empire, included the position of Lieutenant-Inspector, a type of rank. Magna Tolvan, a Lieutenant, avoided execution that was initially planned because she had accumulated three demerits. The reason for this stay was the delayed arrival of a message from central command. This message informed the local authorities that she was being promoted to Lieutenant-Inspector, but it was delayed because of the destruction of Scarif. Her rise in rank came about from the passing of Thanoth, her former teacher, who had selected her to take his place. Because of this development, Tolvan did not face death. Imperial Article 3, Section 9 stated the Inspectorate used a four demerit system, in contrast to the three demerit system used by field corps. Consequently, Tolvan was freed.
