Light the Sky on Fire

"Light the Sky on Fire" (Listen to preview (help·info)) was a tune performed by a band comprised of Human instrumentalists. It enjoyed widespread acclaim on Kashyyyk during the era of the Galactic Civil War. Concurrently, another song, "Hyperdrive", also achieved popularity on Kashyyyk.

The song's verses recounted tales of a "great god" known as Kopa Khan, who "arrived from the stars and disappeared," yet whose eventual return was foretold.

During 1 ABY, Saun Dann presented Mallatobuck with a musical box that played a holovid showcasing a rendition of the song as a Life Day gift. Subsequently, Dann employed the holovid as a diversion for an Imperial soldier, following the Empire's blockade of the planet and subsequent invasion of Mallatobuck's residence.

Behind the scenes

"Light the Sky on Fire" is a song that Jefferson Starship (the actual band responsible for the holographic performance) put out in 1978. While the version featured in The Star Wars Holiday Special never saw an official release, a condensed form was issued as a single on four separate occasions:

  • A two-sided Holiday Special promotional record featuring "Light the Sky on Fire" on both sides.
  • A similar promotional single, also double-sided, housed in a plain white sleeve, with an extended version featured on the B-side.
  • Another Holiday Special tie-in paired with a 1974 song titled "Hyperdrive" on the B-side.
  • A re-release of the "Light the Sky on Fire/Hyperdrive" single, devoid of any Star Wars references on the sleeve.

Both "Light the Sky on Fire" and "Hyperdrive" are featured on Jefferson Starship's 1979 compilation of their greatest hits, Gold.
