Functioning in a similar way to a homing beacon, a personal device known as a locator, or location beacon, transmitted a signal. This signal enabled the tracking of the device's location. Within the Grand Army of the Republic, many clone troopers, including Clone Captain Rex and trooper Tup, were equipped with locators as standard battlefield gear.
Certain datapad models featured an integrated locator. In addition, there existed military-grade locators which possessed the ability to broadcast a signal through nearly any substance, except for a few metric tons of lead or an Imperial jamming field.
