Lucas Learning's purpose was to design educational software that was both fun and challenging for students. This division of LucasArts developed many award-winning educational titles for the PC, including The Gungan Frontier and DroidWorks, all designed to complement the national curriculum.
The company's headquarters resided in San Rafael, California, and it was led by Susan Schilling, who previously served as MECC's senior vice president of development and creative director. Shilling stated that Lucas himself took an active role in the products, and that a core principle for the company was to avoid violence. They produced games starting in 1998, but in mid-2001, they announced the cancellation of a Mac version of Star Wars Super Bombad Racing. That same year, Lucas Learning underwent restructuring and transitioned into Edutopia, also known as the George Lucas Educational Foundation. This new entity became independent from Lucasfilm Ltd. and exited the educational software market.
