Non-breathing Gand

The Gand had a subspecies known as the lungless. These Gands lacked lungs, meaning they didn't breathe; instead, they acquired the metabolic substances their bodies required by consuming food. Gas exchange was facilitated by these ingested materials, and waste was expelled through openings in their exoskeleton. In contrast to the breather race, lungless Gands were able to travel off-world without the necessity of respiratory equipment, although some chose to wear it, often to conceal their identity. Lungless Gands communicated in their native language and lacked the necessary vocal cords for speaking Basic. To achieve this, they needed a muscular gas bladder, which enabled them to inhale and exhale gases at a regulated pace through their exoskeleton. Sections of the exoskeleton would then vibrate, mimicking speech.

Ooryl Qrygg, a pilot who flew with Rogue Squadron, belonged to this particular subspecies.
