Lurrian

The Lurrians were a peaceful species originating from the planet Lur, which was located within the Outer Rim Territories.

Biology and appearance

These humanoids were herbivorous, bipedal beings characterized by a coat of fine, dense white fur and prominent green-blue eyes. The tallest individuals among them rarely reached the waist height of a Human. The pads on the soles of their feet were thick and calloused. This species demonstrated great skill in the fields of bioengineering and genetics, creating diverse animals, including the Asgnat and Grebnar. Seemingly descended from herbivorous ancestors, they evolved to form close-knit family groups. This behavior served, in part, as a defense mechanism, allowing them to effectively protect each other from the dangerous predators inhabiting their planet. As intelligence developed within the species, social evolution fostered a deeper comprehension of their environment.

Society and culture

Their world lacked easily obtained resources like wood or metal. Nonetheless, Lur, a cold planet, teemed with life, including various animals and plants. The Lurrians initially began domesticating certain creatures, first utilizing them as a food source, which eventually evolved into using them for transportation, and ultimately, as construction aids. Over time, they began practicing selective breeding to cultivate desirable traits in these lifeforms. They quickly discovered that various herbs and similar compounds could also influence the genetic code of offspring, leading them to master the art of bioengineering living organisms. Consequently, they genetically engineered creatures for various purposes, ranging from construction to guarding, offering an alternative to conventional technology.

Lurrian society also fostered a peaceful culture, where long lives were often filled with happiness and leisure. Highly social beings, they lived in cities that housed several thousand individuals each. Furthermore, family bonds were strong among them, and violence was uncommon among the Lurrians. Lurrian slaves could be sold for between four and six thousand credits on the Invisible Market.

History

Lurrian slaves captured by Magg and Zlarb

The Lurrians independently developed the art of bioengineering and cultivated numerous genetically modified organisms on their planet. Despite their aptitude, they preferred to remain on their homeworld, with many declining to participate in genetic research contracts with outsiders. Following the conclusion of the Clone Wars, they were among the many species enslaved by the Galactic Empire. Subsequently, the Empire implemented strict regulations on cloning and genetic research, although these imposed laws were met with disapproval by some.

The employers of Zlarb and Magg sought to exploit the Lurrians' skills, but the species refused to engage in any employment contracts. This prompted the two slavers to abduct fifty Lurrians to sell them off-world, enlisting Han Solo early in his smuggling career. The Corellian, however, remained completely ignorant of the slave transport and, upon discovering it, liberated the enslaved Lurrians from the slave traders.

During the Yuuzhan Vong War, many New Republic scientists arrived to study Lurrian bioengineering.
