Barbara Hambly initially conceived the Magrody Institute of Programmable Intelligence for the Star Wars Legends novel titled Children of the Jedi, which saw its publication in May of 1995. Subsequently, its inaugural reference within canon occurred in the reference work Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide, authored by Pablo Hidalgo and made available on December 16 of 2016.
