Mamiens were sizable simian beings that were from Yavin 4. These creatures tended to live alone, and because they were timid and easily startled, getting close to them proved challenging. They also displayed a uniquely unconcerned attitude. Nonetheless, they were extremely defensive of their offspring, and would become violent if their young were threatened. Though mamiens typically moved about on two legs, they sometimes used all four limbs to walk. These beings were covered in a thick, wool-like coat.

After the Battle of Yavin, Breac Slaus, a collector, gave a team of spacers the assignment of tracking down and eliminating a large number of mamiens.
Mamiens made an appearance in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game that was created by Sony Online Entertainment and distributed by LucasArts, before it was shut down on December 15, 2011.
In contrast to how Empire 15 portrayed the Mamien as a very aggressive animal that attacked Biggs Darklighter without being provoked, the mamiens featured in Star Wars Galaxies were generally gentle and unaggressive.
