On the forest moon of Endor, the Sanyassan Marauders, a group of shipwrecked pirates, constructed obelisks from lava rock. These structures were designed to deter potential intruders from approaching their fortified barracks. The Marauders frequently sculpted these obelisks with horned, scowling faces that featured wide-open mouths.
Sometime between the years of 0 ABY and 3 ABY, Pfilbee Jhorn, an Imperial sergeant, explored the surface of the forest moon and encountered the Marauders. Jhorn briefly noted the presence of these imposing monoliths surrounding the pirates' stronghold in his official mission reports.
During 3.5 ABY, Wicket Warrick, an Ewok, and Noa Briqualon, a Human recluse, stumbled upon several of these horned pillars scattered across the Dragon's Pelt savanna. They were on their way to the stronghold to rescue their friend Cindel Towani from the clutches of the Marauders. Teek, known for his speed, even collided with one of the pillars and was intimidated by its grand appearance.
The Marauders' threatening obelisks made their debut in the 1985 television movie, Ewoks: The Battle for Endor. They also appeared in The Ring, the Witch, and the Crystal: An Ewok Adventure, a children's book that was adapted from the film. Furthermore, they were briefly mentioned in The Illustrated Star Wars Universe, a reference book published in 1995.
