Terak's Keep

title: Terak's Keep

Terak's Keep, alternatively known as the Marauders' Stronghold, was a castle erected by King Terak of the Sanyassan Marauders in the era preceding the Battle of Yavin, specifically during the first century. This old-fashioned fortification stood on Endor's forest moon, perched above the Dragon's Pelt savanna on an outcrop of the Dragon's Spine mountain range. Following Terak's downfall during the Galactic Civil War, the castle continued to be occupied by his surviving henchmen. Although internal conflicts swiftly fragmented the remaining Marauders, the Keep eventually came under the control of Zakul, Terak's successor and son.

History

The back side of the Keep.

Around 100 BBY, the Sanyassan Marauders experienced a crash-landing on the moon of Endor, subsequently bringing several regions of the Endorian plains under their dominion. To establish a structured base, they constructed a massive, somber, and unkempt castle overlooking the Dragon's Pelt savanna, situated at the base of the Dragon's Spine mountain range. This structure served as both a home and barracks for their leaders, namely the self-proclaimed King Terak and the Force-sensitive witch Charal. The castle, characterized by its square walls, was built using stone extracted from quarries located in the foothills of the Dragon's Spine.

In the months leading up to the destruction of the second Death Star, the Stronghold sustained partial damage during a conflict between the Sanyassans and the Ewoks. Following King Terak's unfortunate death, the castle later became a refuge for the remaining Sanyassan Marauders. General Yavid subsequently attempted to claim the throne, but his reign was short-lived. Infighting consumed the Sanyassans until Zakul, one of Terak's sons, ascended to become the new King of the Marauders.

Layout

The fortress was constructed from quarried stone blocks transported by blurrgs, the Marauders' beasts of burden. The castle had a bulky, square appearance, lacking in refinement but offering a secure and robust structure. The castle's front entrance was defended by carved lava-rock obelisks adorned with horns, intended to deter enemies and symbolize the Marauders' fearlessness. Crude Sanyassan hieroglyphs covered the stones across the castle entranceway. The central tower was designed to resemble one of the obelisks, featuring a stylized square head with a grinning face and horns.

A deep moat filled with murky water surrounded the stronghold, described by the Human scout Noa Briqualon as being "as black as ink". During the castle's construction, one of the pirates suggested integrating the still-operational automatic defense system from their wrecked starship to enhance protection against attacks. A selective disintegrator field, shaped like a torpedo, was placed in the moat, designed to target any object that came into contact with the water's surface.

The fortress included numerous dungeons and a throne room and was sparsely equipped with rudimentary technology such as torches and candles for lighting. The Marauders repurposed components from their crashed spacecraft as furnishings. King Terak repurposed the captain's chair from the ship's bridge as his throne, positioning it in his audience chamber.

Behind the scenes

King Terak's stronghold made its debut in the 1985 television film Ewoks: The Battle for Endor, depicted as a basic fortress constructed from tan stone. As of 2018, a matte painting of the structure was exhibited at Lucasfilm's headquarters.

Within the MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies, the Marauder's Stronghold serves as the location where players can undertake quests for the Sanyassan Marauders. In the game, the Marauder Stronghold's appearance differs significantly from its cinematic portrayal. This discrepancy may be attributed to limitations in game mechanics, or it could indicate the existence of two distinct locations.
