Maul's father
A male Zabrak from Dathomir, who was a Dathomirian, served as the father to the future Sith Lord, Darth Maul. He was a member of the Nightbrothers, a group of warriors operating on the [planet](/article/planet/legends] of Dathomir in the Outer Rim Territories, and they were subservient to the Nightsisters coven of the Witches of Dathomir. Following Talzin's birth of Maul in [54 BBY](/article/54_bby/legends], and in accordance with the Nightbrother tradition of death after the birth of their child, Maul's father was killed within a year of Maul's birth. After the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Sidious, an associate of Talzin, stole Maul and made him his apprentice, Maul wondered if his parents had spent time searching for him, unaware of his father's death.
Behind the scenes
The 2000 novel Star Wars Episode I Journal: Darth Maul, penned by Jude Watson, indirectly mentioned Maul's father for the first time. Although Maul's father is not explicitly named, the book alludes to Maul's parents. Maul's father was first mentioned directly in the 2012 novel Darth Plagueis, authored by James Luceno.
Various sources, including Darth Plagueis, imply that the witch Kycina is Maul's mother. However, the comic series Star Wars: Darth Maul—Son of Dathomir, specifically the third issue written by Jeremy Barlow and released on July 16, 2014, establishes Talzin as Maul's mother. As Son of Dathomir is the more recent source, this article prioritizes its information. In Darth Plagueis, Kycina states that Maul's father is dead due to tradition when asked about him by Darth Sidious. While Kycina's role has been retconned, the information about Maul's father might still be accurate, as it doesn't contradict Son of Dathomir.
