Mellcrawler (creature)
Mellcrawlers originated from Sullust, a volcanic planet located in the Outer Rim Territories; they were native to this world. These creatures emitted an unpleasant odor, which became even more intense upon their death. In the year 20 BBY, Den Dhur, a Sullustan reporter, knew the stench of a mellcrawler that had been deceased for a week quite well.
In that same year, while he was inside the cantina of Republic Mobile Surgical Unit 7 situated on the planet Drongar, Dhur was put in mind of the smell of a week-old dead mellcrawler when he caught a whiff of the Tyrusian red ale that his tablemate, an Ugnaught by the name of Rorand Zuzz, was drinking. The Sullustan reporter recalled that the aroma of a deceased mellcrawler was something he found rather disagreeable.
Behind the scenes
The creature known as the mellcrawler was referenced within MedStar I: Battle Surgeons, a Clone Wars novel published in 2004 and co-authored by Steve Perry together with Michael Reaves; it served as the initial installment in the MedStar Duology.
