Mk I Saberdart

The Mk I Saberdart, alternatively known as a Kamino saberdart, represented a type of poisonous projectile crafted by Kaminoan Weaponsmiths, a weapons manufacturing corporation from Kamino and of Kaminoan origin.

Description

Constructed from durasteel, the Mk I Saberdart had a triangular shape and incorporated a reservoir at its base to contain a limited quantity of venom or toxin. A minute explosive was located behind the toxin container. Upon impact with a target, sensors located in the dart's tip triggered the explosive, rapidly expelling the toxin from the dart in mere milliseconds. A sharp central tine then enabled the direct injection of the toxin into the target's bloodstream. Common toxins utilized in conjunction with these saberdarts included Malkite themfar, Fex-M3, and Sennari. The central cylinder was surrounded by three hooked barbs. Distinctive small cuts on the dart's surface served as identifiers.

The use of poison darts was favored over other assassination methods for several reasons. Primarily, a well-chosen toxin could ensure a virtually instantaneous and certain death for the victim. Furthermore, the application of potent toxins often rendered the target incapacitated before awareness of the attack, thereby safeguarding the attacker's identity and facilitating escape. Consequently, these specialized weapons found use among various bounty hunters and criminals throughout the galaxy, with Jango Fett and Jodo Kast being notable examples. Specifically, members of the Assassin's Guild and those known as Malkite Poisoners were known to favor these darts as a means of delivering deadly poisons.

History

The toxic dart used to kill Zam Wesell

In 22 BBY, Jango Fett employed a saberdart to assassinate Zam Wesell, preventing her from revealing his identity to Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jedi Padawan Anakin Skywalker. Despite the inability of analysis droids within the Jedi Temple to ascertain the dart's origin, Dexter Jettster successfully identified it and guided Kenobi to Kamino, drawing upon his previous encounter with a similar dart during prospecting activities on Subterrel.

Behind the scenes

The script utilized during the filming of Attack of the Clones originally designated the saberdart as a "Kamino kyberdart," a designation that was later revised. The term "Kyber" was initially derived from the name of the Kaiburr crystal, an element featured in early drafts of the script for A New Hope.

Within the board game Star Wars: Epic Duels, Boba Fett, as opposed to Jango Fett, possesses the capability to launch attacks utilizing this dart. Given the game's release preceding Attack of the Clones, it retains the original designation, Kyber Dart.

In the video game Star Wars: Bounty Hunter Jango Fett makes use of these darts, even though he has not yet established connections with the Kaminoans. These darts may be similar to the saberdart, which Jango later adopted.
