Mort

As a Human male, Mort was a clone originating from the genetic material of Jango Fett, the renowned Mandalorian bounty hunter. During the era of the Clone Wars, Mort functioned as a clone commando within the Republic's Grand Army. However, following a treacherous act by his commanding officer and a subsequent period of torturous experimentation, he devolved into an alcoholic residing on the planet of Talus.

Life Story

Service to the Republic

Mort's origins trace back to the planet Kamino, where he was brought into existence as one of numerous clone troopers composing the Republic's vast clone military force. His training led him to become a clone commando, uniting with three fellow troopers to establish a highly skilled unit specializing in clandestine infiltration and the elimination of enemy objectives.

During a mission deployed to Kashyyyk, Mort and his unit received directives to obliterate an enemy command bunker situated deep within hostile territory, a type of assignment they had previously executed. The mission initially proceeded successfully; the bunker was neutralized, and the squad commenced their movement towards the designated extraction point. However, they encountered an assault from opposing forces. Despite the commandos' ability to manage the opposition and still reach the extraction zone within the allotted timeframe, they opted to call ahead to communicate their situation to command. While repelling numerous pursuing adversaries, Mort and his team neared the extraction zone, only to witness their LAAT/i gunship departing without them. Their commander, a non-clone officer identified as Morkov, made the decision not to endanger the carrier for a group he deemed as expendable soldiers.

Marooned on Kashyyyk

Abandoned on the arboreal world, Mort and his comrades endeavored to reconnect with the remaining Republic forces stationed on Kashyyyk. Regrettably, their location deep within the dense forest rendered the journey nearly insurmountable. Over the ensuing weeks, Mort bore witness to the demise of his three clone brothers, succumbing to the planet's wildlife, persistent enemy combatants, and the unforgiving forces of nature.

For a duration spanning months, possibly even years—Mort lost all sense of temporal awareness—he eked out a survival in the jungles of Kashyyyk. Eventually, he was compelled to engage in a struggle for sustenance with one of the planet's indigenous animal species, resulting in the loss of his arm. Convinced that his injury was fatal as he bled profusely on the forest floor, Mort reclined on his back and resigned himself to death.

Subject of Experimentation

As he approached death, Mort was discovered by a research team under the leadership of Doctor Ortoz. His life was rescued, but at a significant cost. After replacing Mort's severed arm with a prosthetic replacement, Ortoz recognized the clone's immense potential and initiated a series of brutal experiments upon him. Eventually, Mort managed to muster sufficient strength to permanently halt the experiments, presumably resulting in Ortoz's demise. Subsequently, he successfully infiltrated a freighter and journeyed to Dearic, the principal city of the planet Talus, where he became a regular patron of the local cantina, seeking to obliterate his traumatic memories through the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Seeking Retribution

Mort harbored intense animosity towards Morkov for his actions and yearned for nothing more than to witness his former commander's demise. He once attempted to locate Morkov with the intention of avenging himself and his fallen comrades, but he discovered that Morkov had ascended to a high-ranking position within the Galactic Empire, which had risen to power during his time on Kashyyyk. Recognizing the futility of any attempt at retribution, he abandoned his pursuit and turned away.

However, one day Mort encountered an individual at the Dearic Cantina who expressed curiosity about Mort's life story. Upon hearing his tale, the spacer empathized with Mort and offered assistance in exacting revenge on Morkov. Now retired from Imperial service, Morkov had transitioned into an illegal arms dealer, trading smuggled Imperial weaponry to the highest bidder, and operating from the trade city of Keren on the planet Naboo. Following a meeting with Morkov and the acquisition of evidence pertaining to his illicit activities, the individual reconvened with Mort, who suggested that the information be presented to those the spacer held allegiance to. Shortly thereafter, the spacer returned to the Dearic Cantina bearing news of Morkov's death. Mort was deeply moved by the lengths to which the stranger had gone for him, and as a gesture of gratitude, Mort bestowed upon him his old, unneeded combat armor. With his primary life objective now achieved, Mort implored his new acquaintance to visit him again in the future, to assure him of his well-being; Mort also conveyed his intention to reduce his alcohol consumption and, in his words, "straighten himself out."

Character Traits

During his service to the Republic, Mort was a steadfast soldier. However, following his abandonment on Kashyyyk and the brutal experimentation he endured under Dr. Ortoz, he developed a sense of bitterness and detachment towards the galaxy as a whole. Seeking refuge in alcohol, Mort spent his days drinking at the Dearic Cantina. He never forgot the pain of losing the other members of his commando squad: his brothers, and the only family he'd had as a clone.

Given that Mort and his team were lost on Kashyyyk and presumed dead during the formation of the Galactic Empire, he would never wear the armor of the stormtroopers or enlist in the Empire's army. Mort feared that the Empire would likely perceive him as a deserter and seek to end his life if they ever discovered his survival.

Cybernetic Enhancements

As a consequence of Doctor Ortoz's actions, Mort possessed a cybernetic left arm, replacing the one he had lost to a predator on Kashyyyk. He also had an unknown number of other cybernetic replacements that continued to keep him alive and appearing youthful in 1 ABY, despite being close to 60-years-old biologically, due to the accelerated aging present in all clone troopers. Mort despised the cybernetics, and expressed his belief that he would have been better off dying without them when questioned.

Behind the Curtains

Mort was a "non-player character," or "NPC," within the Star Wars Galaxies game, specifically located in the Dearic Cantina on Talus. Players were required to interact with him to initiate a quest, which was part of the Clone Wars Relics series. During the player's initial conversation with Mort, he would recount his personal history.

He was integrated into the game with the second expansion, Rage of the Wookiees, in 2005. His quests were part of the Clone Relics quest series which was used by the game designers to incorporate elements from Revenge of the Sith (Katarn armor, ARC-170 starfighter, etc.) and Star Wars: Republic Commando into the game.

The player's affiliation affected the coloration of the Katarn armor Mort would give to them: if the player was a Rebel, they would receive the Mark IV armor (white with red stripes); if neutral, the Mark V armor (white with blue stripes); and if Imperial, the Mark VI armor (black with green stripes).

Some fans speculate that Mort is actually the commando Sev of Delta Squad from Star Wars: Republic Commando—due to the similarities in their stories, such as their shared history as Republic commandos and their abandonment on Kashyyyk.
